Similarities and Differences between Deodorant and Antiperspirant

The difference between deodorants and antiperspirantsMost people don’t know the actual meaning of these 2 terms deodorant and antiperspirant hence they assume that they serve the same purpose. Deodorants are products that protect the body against odor caused by excessive sweat by increasing the skin’s acidity to avoid attracting bacteria thus keeping your skin fresh throughout the day. On the other hand, antiperspirants basically contain aluminum-based products that control the rate at which the skin produces sweat by blocking the skin pores. Below are some of the similarities and differences between these two products to help you have a better understanding.

Similarities

  1. Both the best deodorants for excessive sweating and antiperspirants provide all day freshness by preventing odor caused by bacteria and reducing the sweating rate hence preventing underarms wetness.
  2. Both deodorants and antiperspirants can result to minor skin irritation depending on the amounts of aluminum compounds or alcohol that the product contains.
  3. Deodorants and antiperspirants do not cause cancer as opposed to what many people have been misled to believe. There is no scientific evidence that supports this argument.

Differences

  1. Deodorants helps to keep the sweat odor in control ensuring that you stay fresh all day while antiperspirants reduce the sweating rate thus preventing armpit wetness.
  2. Deodorants are considered to be cosmetic because they are products meant to beautify and cleanse the skin while antiperspirants are considered to be drugs because affect the functioning of the body by reducing the sweating rate.
  3. Deodorants are alcohol-based, they turn the skin acidic hence less likely to attract bacteria while the active ingredient in antiperspirants is aluminum-based compounds that block the skin pores thus controlling the rate of sweating.
  4. All types of deodorants are only capable of controlling the odor while antiperspirants can control both the sweaty dampness and the odor depending on the level of aluminum-based compounds in the particular product.
